2 april 2025              Your Bike North NewsLETTER

The sun did not shine, it was too wet to ride...

so here are five tips for cycling 'inside':
  1. bring your bike indoors and give it a good clean and service
  2. sign up for Zwift or the like and keep the wheels moving indoors
  3. clean out your cycle kit drawer, toss the old or worn
  4. sort out your first aid kit / items in your saddle bag, replacing any items that are out of date, broken or empty
  5. go online to your favourite bike store and purchase any new items you need!

They're not (completely) made of paper  ...

Speaking of rain, there was a hopeful and hardy bunch of Bike North members heading south last weekend for a few days break under the guidance of Ride Leader Alison Pryor.

Rides appreciated Alison planning the weekend once again but not so much the rain that pelted down on Saturday.
It afforded a good excuse for the group of seven to roam the excellent Handmade Markets, visiting the art gallery and the Australian Museum which has an interactive exhibit of the Pompeii eruption.

Sunday morning proved fair weatherwise (although windy) and the group got their cycling kilometre quota by riding out to Tuggeranong and a cuppa at the Mystic Mocha Cafe.

Vale Di Lawrence

For almost five years, Di Lawrence edited Chain Reaction and its predecessor in the old system, attended our monthly Executive Committee meetings, was a Social Media Guru and part of the Social Committee.

Di recently passed away peacefully after a brief, vigorous fight with cancer, which she undertook with her trademark determination and good humour.

Di loved her involvement with Bike North and had many of her friends join.

The Executive Committee deeply mourns Di’s passing.  We are pleased that at least we were able to recognise her many contributions recently, through her Volunteer Award (see Chain Reaction, 5 March 2025).

We extend our profound sympathies to her family, especially her children and grandchildren and to her wide circle of friends.

Details for a memorial service are still to be finalised.  Please let me know if you would like to be informed of them. (I understand it will also be live-streamed.)

Advocacy update

Some advocacy wins in the last couple of months:
  • After lengthy advocacy by Carolyn New, Tony Stanley, David Thomson and BNSW,  Transport for NSW has allocated funding from the $1.3bn Warringah Freeway Upgrade project budget for active transport improvements around the WFU  and North Sydney CBD. Let's see what they come up with (with a little help from their BN friends!)
  • Bike North members Franc Vaccher and Ken Quail have been appointed to the Lane Cove Council bike committee. It is great to have representation and a voice on this committee after a long absence from Lane Cove affairs.
  • The report of the parliamentary inquiry into e-bikes was released. Titled 'Report No 25 - Portfolio Committee No. 6 - Transport and the Arts - Use of e-scooters, e-bikes and related mobility options', itsrecommendations include increased funding for active transport and lowering of speed limits.  Read the full report here

Tour de Cowra, 2025.

Please register for your intended rides.

This year’s Tour de Cowra features morning tea stops at many of the rides. The hotels at Wooodstock, Gooloogong and Koorawatha have been very kind, and are opening just for us. Understandably, however, they will need to know how many of us to cater for! We would also like to give the shop at Wyangala Dam a heads up on numbers.

Bike North will be giving each of you a full colour map of your chosen route. These maps are expensive to produce, so, we need to know numbers for each of the rides.

It will help the us greatly if you register for all your rides ASAP.

Why not do it now? Just visit the Bike North Calendar and check out the Tour rides between 18 and 25 April.
Many thanks,

David and John, Team Tour de Cowra
