9 September 2026         Your Bike North NewsLETTER

Have you Activ8ed as yet?

In the first week of Activ8 there were 14 rides on the Bike North Calendar and 113 individual members have taken advantage of the offering, plus great weather, to participate in Bike North rides, some on multiple occasions.
Don’t forget, Activ8 encourages all Ride Leaders to list at least two rides during the month and for all members to ride at least twice.
All those who achieve this will go in the draw for one of two $50 vouchers on your favourite bike shop or on-line outlet.
Every ride increases your chance of winning, so get active and Activ8.

Activ8 Personal Profile

Member Name:

Judy McLean

How Long Have you been a Member:

I’m in my 4th year of membership.

What do you like about Bike North:

I really enjoy the friendship and support of other riders who all share the same passion for cycling. When I first joined, I was very unsure if I would fit in as I had never ridden in group rides before. I had previously just done a few local rides with my kids years ago. After my netball team folded during Covid, my friend Olivia (a ride leader), encouraged me to join Bike North. After my first ride, I was convinced that this was going to be my new hobby. With the advice and support of the ride leaders and other riders I soon got myself sorted with the right bike and the skills needed to ride safely.

What type of Bike North Rides do you prefer and why:

I enjoy a range of different rides from steady paced 50k rides on my road bike to more challenging undulating terrain on my newly acquired gravel e-bike.

Did you ride through Winter or are you Activ8ing:

Yes, I did ride regularly throughout winter as I really enjoy the exercise, the challenge of a cool start and especially the chats during the coffee break. I am looking forward to even more rides during Activ8te.

Outside of cycling, what other hobbies or interests do you have:

I enjoy Pilates, long walks and a wide range of activities with my Probus club.

Given the choice, what cycling related activity would you love to do:

I am eager to explore more overseas cycling tours after having completed the Alps to Ocean in New Zealand in 2025 and a cycling tour of Japan in April this year. I’m also very keen to do some of the popular rail trails around NSW, QLD and VIC. The Munda Biddi Trail in WA is also on my to do list.

How Long Have you been a Member:  2 years

What do you like about Bike North: Incredible variety of rides and people. Bike North rides are fun even when they are challenging. Perhaps more than anything, I have learnt a lot from amazing mentors - safety, techniques, gear.

What type of Bike North Rides do you prefer and why:  I most enjoy challenging rides, whether that means hills, distance or pace. But I also like relaxed rides in my local area and rides that are educational. Two educational rides stand out - art in the city and Parramatta boundary markers. Just wonderful!

Did you ride through Winter or are you Activ8ing: I ride all year round.

Outside of cycling, what other hobbies or interests do you have: I am retired and like to keep myself busy and “useful”, particularly as no grandkids in sight yet. I volunteer in 2 health/aged care facilities. I garden, clean, shave and talk to patients/families etc. I also assist patients to write their life stories (biographies). Such a privilege.

I donate plasma at Life Blood every fortnight after a nurse on a Bike North ride told me how much demand there is for plasma. Please do!

Given the choice, what cycling related activity would you love to do: Nothing too ambitious here except to maintain my health and keep on riding. I really admire the long distance riders and wouldn’t mind emulating them but, to be honest, I am just as happy cycling on shorter rides around Sydney.

As part of the Bike North 30th Anniversary celebrations,  the Sydney Observer featured an article about Bike North in their September edition.

The Sydney Observer has a readership of approximately 100,000 across three of the nine LGAs we work in (Hornsby, Kuring-Gai and Willoughby).  See screenshot or click on the link below and navigate to page 18.
